Every student that has or is attending school in the province of Alberta has a State Province ID which uniquely identifies a student. This ID is also known as the Alberta Student Number (ASN). There are scenarios where this ID could have been created in error or where a student was created more than once resulting in a person having more than one State Province ID. Both of these scenarios are addressed by the PASI core.
If a State Province ID is deactivated by Alberta Education the information will still be accessible but not modifiable. This would happen if a new student was created in error and has no valid enrolments attached.
The second scenario is if a State Province ID is created for a student that already has one and that new State Province ID is used for one or more enrolments. This situation requires the state province Ids to be linked once the issue has been identified (this process is requested by contacting Alberta Education). This linking process will mark one of the Ids as the primary State Province ID.
Once the State Province ID provided is linked to another, the student personal information (name(s), address, birthday, etc) will be returned from the preferred ID and the enrolment history will be the enrolments from all linked Ids. If the 'Inactive' State Province ID is request an exception to be return indicating what State Province ID should be used.
